Under the $685.7m contract, the company will deliver new Patriot fire units that feature advanced technology, an improved man-machine interface and reduced life cycle costs.
The Patriot is a long-range, all-altitude, all-weather defence system designed to provide protection against advanced threats including aircraft, tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
The target engagement can be carried out in manual, semi-automatic or automatic mode. After launch, the missile is acquired by the AN/MPQ-53 phased array radar mounted on a trailer.
The radar carries out search, target detection, track and identification, missile tracking and guidance and electronic counter-countermeasures (ECCM) functions, has the capacity to track up to 100 targets, and can also providing missile guidance data for up to nine missiles.
The Patriot is widely used by the US, Egypt, Germany, Greece, Israel, Japan, Kuwait, the Netherlands and Saudi Arabia.
The company was awarded contracts in 2008 and 2009 for the upgrade of existing missile systems and the delivery of new fire units respectively, and has recently completed delivery of the first upgraded configuration-3 radar system to Taiwan.
Raytheon is the prime contractor for both domestic and international Patriot air and missile defence systems and system integrator for Patriot advanced capability-3 missiles.
