Selex Galileo is preparing to submit a tender for a range of capabilities for the Malaysian Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) programme when an announcement for it is made.
Tim Savory, VP of Far East regional marketing for the company told Shephard at DSA 2012 in Kulal Lumpur on 16 April, that 'this is an important programme for us, and we would absolutely in the next five years like to see a programme on that.'
The offers from the company will include: the Airborne Tactical Observation Surveillance (ATOS) system; ESM systems; EO turrets; and airborne radars.
The MPA will be operated by the army and navy, and Selex is anticipating an announcement 'in the next couple of years', but Savory did point out that the looming Malaysian election will slow defence programmes down.
Meanwhile, the company continues to explore links with local manufacturers. In 2008 at the Paris Air Show Selex and Malaysian company CTRM announced a teaming agreement to develop the Falco UAV for the local market.
'We still have a relationship with CTRM,' Savory explained. 'Should the requirement mature to fit our requirements we will work with them again.
'We're still promoting it in the region,' he continued, and 'we have active campaigns for it going on at the moment.'
The company provides some 60% of the avionics for the Eurofighter Typhoon, and Savory said that supporting the campaign in Malaysia is of importance to Selex.
Selex also provides the Seaspray EO turret for the Lynx helicopters in Malaysia, and Savory said that there is an upgrade requirement for this.
'In this region customers are very switched on and know what they want,' he continued. 'They buy a lot of leading edge, state of the art equipment.
'The capability requirement here is growing and will continue to grow. Nearly every country in the region is looking to enhance its indigenous capabilities.'
