Jenoptik has used the opening of the Eurosatory exhibition in Paris to launch a new laser rangefinder, which combines a high resolution thermal imager with a rangefinder, digital magnetic compass and GPS.
Announcing the release of the Nyxus Bird rangefinder, the company claimed the system was the first multi-functional thermal imager that combines day/night vision with a target localisation capability in a package weighing less than 1.5kg for easy one-handed operation.
‘Enhancing the dismounted soldier’s reconnaissance abilities while optimising his mobility, Nyxs uBird satisfies the demanding requirements of infantry and special forces for powerful and lightweight portable optronic equipment,’ the company said.
Designed for use by infantry and special forces, including national future soldier programmes, the laser ranger finder has already been pre-selected for the German Infantryman of the Future – Enhanced System (IdZ-ES) where it will be integrated as reconnaissance equipment.
The system features an eyesafe Jenoptik laser rangefinder operating at 1,550 nanometers, which prevents detection by night vision devices based on image intensifiers.
Nyxus Bird is a further development of Jenoptik’s thermography technology and the thermal imager’s ‘high resolution thermal imager provides clear night vision in absolute darkness, vision through fog or smoke and detection of camouflaged targets’, according to the company.
‘The uncooled infrared detector ensures noiseless operation, a short startup time and long autonomous battery operating time,’ Jenoptik said.
‘Multiple coated monocular glass optics (direct view optics) with seven-fold magnification offer high resolution day vision and can perfectly be combined with standard helmet mounted image intensifiers or night vision goggles.’
