MBDA has launched the CVS301 Vigilus concept for the weaponisation of MALE UAVS.
Speaking at a media briefing at the Farnborough International Airshow, Chris Allard, principle engineer for advanced technologies at the company, said the system is only at concept level, but it is looking at two different missiles for the system, the 7kg Gladius and the 100kg Caelus.
'We've looked at technology from the past 20 years and made assumptions for the future,' Allard explained. 'We've tried to design the system with the flexibility for a combination of missiles. We could equip the launcher with all Caelus or Gladius missiles.'
'Right from the start of the programme we engaged with different users. The key capability is that it is a weapon system with increased stand off range for the UAV.'
The system includes the Armatus launcher, which is an intelligent design that contains the data link and mission planning systems for the missile.
'The launcher is the hub of the system. We've tried to effectively remove some of the restraints and also created a new method of missile attachment,' Allard said.
The system has a reduced IR and noise signature, and can 'go beneath the cloud base.
'Any missile within the dimensions of the launcher will fit. The launcher has been specifically designed for medium endurance UAVs,' Allard continued. 'The aim is not to build it as a product as of yet but to see what customers want from the system.'
Vigilus is due to be at production level by 2035.
