Israeli company Roboteam is working with the US Army to further develop its Micro Tactical Ground Robot (MTGR), according to company representatives.
At the Modern Day Marine exhibition in Quantico, Roboteam displayed the MTGR, which a company spokesman claimed is the lightest UGV with the ability to climb stairs.
Roboteam programme manager and design leader Mor Rotbart said the MTGR was developed for counter-IED or EOD applications while equipped with a ‘tactical manipulator’.
‘It was very important for us to have it as light as possible, as intuitive as possible and as rugged as possible,’ Rotbart said.
Weighing in at 13 lbs, the MTGR features a 360°, five camera video system and is powered by a standard BB-2557/U military battery.
The UGV is controlled by Ruggedized Operators Control Unit (ROCU) operating on either Windows 7 or Android with a touchscreen interface. Literature released at the show showed the MTGR outfitted for CBRN detection, SAR, crowd control and as a logistic carrier.
While describing the US Army as the company’s ‘prime customer’ for the MTGR, Rotbart was unwilling to disclose the level of testing carried out by the US military to date.
However, it is understood the UGV has undergone operational testing as well as attracting interest from other services and customers, with the Israel Defence Force in particular conducting recent user tests with special forces units.
Rotbart said the UGV was already in low rate production at the company’s headquarters in Israel as well as at a new production facility in Mississippi.
Roboteam has also developed the heavier Probot, which can carry a 230kg payload, and the Individual Robotic Intelligence System (IRIS), which is a 2 pound surveillance UGV that can be powered by AA batteries and operate for up to four hours.
