PZL Swidnik has started the development of a naval version of its W-3 Sokol twin-engined helicopter.
The aircraft, which has been given the designation W-3PL/N is based on the W-3PL Gluszec multi-role armed helicopter now in service with the Polish armed forces and builds on experience gained from the work on the W-3 Anaconda maritime SAR helicopter operated by the Polish Navy in the Baltic Sea.
In service W-3PL/Ns will be fitted with a range of mission equipment including search radar, anti-submarine warfare gear such as a dipping sonar and sonobuoys as well as EO/IR sensors and a rescue hoist.
The aircraft will also feature an emergency floatation system, new landing gear and main rotor blade folding system. Weapon systems are likely to include air-to-surface missiles, torpedoes and machine guns.
Nicola Bianco, MD of PZL-Świdnik, said 'This latest addition to the product range benefits from our unrivalled expertise in the naval helicopter sector and builds upon the success of the Sokol platform.'
