Cosworth and CQC developed a technology demonstrator of a Future Soldier System named Man-Worn Power and Data.
This demonstrator was recently delivered and will undergo further research and trials to develop the next step of requirements by the UK MoD. The aim of the programme was to simplify connectivity and reduce the weight of soldier worn electronic systems. The development was made in five month.
The demonstrator is using the Selex PRR, a display PANTHER DB6 by MilDef, TE connectors and a lot of COTS products. These are only samples, as the open architecture will allow the use nearly all devices. The flexible power architecture allows the soldier to tailor the battery weight carried to the mission profile and to be fully informed of his electronic power status. Not required, but part of the demonstrator, is a heart rate monitor. The heart and mind of the system/vest is the Cosworth Power Control Module (PCM) that connects up to seven power and data connectors. Each connector provides a high speed USB 2.0 data port. The PCM has a weight of only 180 grams.
