Selex ES has awarded a contract to ITT Exelis for the production and supply of binocular i-Aware tactical mobility night-vision goggles (TM-NVG) for the Italian Army's Future Soldier modernisation programme.
The goggles delivered under the contract are expected to serve either as a stand-alone NVG or a part of the complete soldier system, to help improve situational awareness of the soldier.
Exelis night-vision and tactical communications systems division president Nick Bobay said the company would supply the most advanced technology available to support the Italian Army's Future Soldier programme.
"Our i-Aware TM-NVG provides the night-vision capability our customers have come to expect and new capabilities that our customers will need for the future," Bobay said. The company signed an exclusive cooperation agreement with Selex ES for delivery of i-Aware goggles into the Italian market in October 2012.
Designed in collaboration with Selex ES and the Italian Army, i-Aware is an advanced, multi-purpose NGV designed to connect dismounted soldier to the tactical network, and provide real-time video access to critical tactical intelligence for improved decision-making in the battlefield.
Capable of enhancing operational effectiveness in both night and daytime missions, the item offers the same night-vision capabilities in a light-weight binocular as the AN/PVS-14, but with advanced technical features to augment soldier mobility.
Known as Soldato Futuro, the Future Soldier modernisation programme aims at equipping the Italian soldiers with an integrated set of high-technology uniforms and equipment, such as body armour, helmets, command and control (C2), communication, wheeled vehicles, as well as target acquisition systems among others.
Led by Selex Communications, the industry team for the programme also includes Aero Sekur, Beretta, Galileo Avionica, Larimart and Sistema Compositi.
