iRobot is focusing its efforts on the Asia-Pacific market in the lead up to a possible permanent presence in the region.
Speaking to Shephard at DSA 2012 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 16 April, Roy Rondoe, senior international sales manager for the company said: 'Up until a few years ago 90% of our business was with the US DoD. We're trying to increase our presence in the Asia-Pacific region dramatically.
'Now, because of shrinking budgets, we're putting our efforts into Asia, and I definitely see an “iRobot Asia” in the future.'
Rondoe said iRobot has seven distributors in the region, and they serve to 'represent iRobot from an Asian perspective'.
He said that the company deployed two Pacbots and two Warrior UGVs to Japan in response to the earthquake last year, and the platforms were in operation for a year.
'As a result we've started to see follow on business in Japan, and we also have distributors in South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Australia,' he explained.
Insitu Pacific is the official distributor for Australia and New Zealand, and utilises its experience in engineering and operating UAVs to sell iRobot's systems, as well as offering technical services and after sales care.
'When you look at the robotics in industry there are four or five significant players. Many are small, and this causes a lot of confusion,' Rondoe continued.
'We feel we have a very broad product line to offer to the region, and we have key features that distinguish us, including a modular, multi-mission capability design.'
With 65 different accessories and options for the platforms, Rondoe said that it can offer a platform for multiple mission types, and shipped the UGVs to Japan after the earthquake with all options, representing the company's utility in the situations common in the region.
